The Area
 |
The
Countryside
Located in the ancient province of Munster,
Tipperary
is famed for its history, its lush green countryside and its
rolling hills.
The surroundings to Tipperary Mountain Trekking
Centre at Rusheen are no exception. You can ride or ramble
over hundreds of acres of unspoiled countryside containing
ring-forts, fairy forts and a standing stone reckoned to be
as much as 6,000 years old. Nature lovers will delight in
the diversity of the wildflowers, birds and animals, while
star-gazers will be entranced by the rare opportunity to see
the constellations at night, unaffected by the glare of city
lights.
The area is excellent for hill walking, with the Black Hill
(1,100 ft above sea level) a challenging walk through the
pastures at the rear of Rusheen House. From its summit your
view will roam over nine counties and include the beautiful
Slieve Felim, Slivermines and Slieve Bloom mountain ranges,
the
Devil's Bit Mountain, the Galtees, Slievenamon, and Keeper
Hill.

The
Rivers and Lakes
The rivers and lakes of Tipperary are popular with anglers
and scenic Lough Derg, the largest lake on the River Shannon,
is a short drive away, with facilities for boating, fishing
and other water sports available at Shannon
Sailing. The Clodagh River, one of the cleanest in Europe,
borders Rusheen. You can wander along its streams, swim in
it, and fish for trout and salmon.
